What to Expect at Your First Psychiatry Visit
The short answer: Your first psychiatry appointment is a conversation, not a test. Plan on about 90 minutes to talk with your provider about how you have been feeling and what you hope to change. There is no pressure to start medication or commit to any treatment plan. You leave with options and decide what comes next.
Before your appointment
Getting started takes just a few simple steps, and our team will guide you through each one.
Submit the New Patient Form. This tells us a little about you and what brings you in. A member of our team will reach out within 2 business days.
We verify your insurance before your visit to avoid surprises. If you have questions about billing or costs, our administrative team is happy to help.
Activate your MYIO patient portal. After your appointment is scheduled, you will receive an invitation to activate it. The portal lets you manage your care, message providers, pay balances, and schedule future appointments.
How to prepare
A little preparation helps you get the most from your time with your provider. Don't worry about perfection. Anything you can't remember, we can work through together.
Complete your intake paperwork in the MYIO portal, including:
Reviewing our policies
Your current medications and doses, including supplements
Past diagnoses and treatments, and what did or didn't help
Family mental health history, as far as you know it
Jot down your top 2 to 3 concerns or goals. What would you most like to feel better about?
Write down any questions you want to ask. No question is too small.
During the visit
Your first appointment is mostly about getting to know you. Your provider will ask questions to understand the full picture, such as:
What you have been experiencing and how long it has been going on
Your health and mental health history
Your sleep, energy, and appetite
Alcohol, substance use, and caffeine
Daily life: work or school, relationships, and stress
It's okay not to have all the answers. Many people struggle to describe their feelings, and that's normal. Your provider will help guide the conversation.
A diagnosis may take more than one visit. Getting to know you well matters more than rushing to a label. Often the clearest picture emerges over several conversations.
You are a partner in your care. Your provider will share what they are noticing and talk through options with you. Your goals, preferences, and questions shape the plan.
After the visit
By the end of your appointment, you and your provider will discuss possible next steps. Depending on your needs, options may include:
Medication
Therapy with one of our licensed therapists
Genetic testing to help guide medication choices
Further evaluation to better understand what's going on
You don't have to decide everything immediately. Take time to think it over and ask questions.
Follow-up visits happen regularly, with frequency depending on your needs. Some people check in more often at first, then less as things settle.
Our team is here between visits. You can message your care team anytime through the MYIO portal or call our office at (503)-389-8860. Our staff is responsive and ready to support you as your care evolves.
Common worries, answered
"Will I be judged?" No. We honor everyone who comes to us, and we are here to help, not judge. Reaching out takes real courage, and we respect that.
"Do I have to take medication?" No. Our goal is to find the best treatment options for you, and that may not include medication. In fact, medication is typically not started at a first visit, especially for people who have never taken psychiatric medication before. You make any decision about medication with your provider.
"Is this confidential?" Yes. Your privacy matters to us. We follow HIPAA, the federal law that protects your health information, and we take great care to keep what you share private.
Ready to take the first step?
Your first visit is simply a chance to be heard and to explore what might help. We'll meet you where you are and move at your pace.
Fill out our New Patient Form, and our team will reach out within 2 business days.
